When you hear powder snow crunching under your skis and see the majestic summits of the Alps line the horizon, you are right - in Zell am See - Kaprun ! 3 ski areas - Kitzsteinhorn, Schmittenhöhe and Maiskogel with 138 km of perfectly maintained ski slopes, where many of these in the perpetual ice of the glacier.

The skiing season in Zell am See-Kaprun starts early autumn and extends into early summer. On the Kitzsteinhorn glacier you can ski and snowboard on snow-covered slopes for ten months of the year.

Ski, snowboard, cross country skiing & ski touring

At the Schmittenhöhe with 77 kilometres, the Kitzsteinhorn with 41 kilometres of ski slopes and the Maiskogel family mountain you can experience wonderful winter adventures. Also the 220 kilometres of cross-country skiing trails await the cross-country skiers and ski tour enthusiasts. The nearest trails are located just 50 metres behind our hotel.

You can find the ski bus stop 50 m from Hotel Zur Burg. Ski shuttle transfer operates every 30 minutes and within couple of minutes brings you to the jet station. If you are holder of a valid ski pass, transfer is free of charge.

Do you want to learn to ski or to improve your style ? Visit one of many ski schools in Kaprun. Our reception will gladly provide you wth all the necessary information. All the suitable ski equipment you can obtain in our partner ski rentals.

Alternative winter sports

In winter offers the enchanting landscape with sprinkled meadows, mountains and forests a beautiful setting for all sport activities.

Winter hiking & Nordic walking
If you don't feel like exploring the mountains on your own, you can choose to join one of the guided snow shoe and winter hiking tours. But you you feel confident and want to enjoy the hike on your own, choose your route at this incteractive winter hike map of Zell am See - Kaprun Tourismus. Nordic Walking sticks are available to rent for free at our hotel.

Tobogganing is a great fun - doesn´t matter if for children or adults. There are more tobogganing tracks in the surroundings of the hotel such as 1,5 km long illuminated toboggan run from "Köhlergrabe" through "Schmittental", Maisiflitzerbahn in Kaprun or the fun park Erlebnisberg in Piesendorf.

If you prefer ice skating to skiing, try it on the frozen Zeller Lake or the Zell am See Ice Hall.


Summer in Zell am See - Kaprun - that is a combination of azure and sky blue. These are the nicest days of the year here ! Between the glittering fairytale world of our valley and the attractive sporting activities offered at Kitzsteinhorn and Schmittenhöhe, you will forget completely about your everyday stress and worries.


Pleasure is the main focus of all hiking possibilities in Zell am See-Kaprun. Your hikes will present wonderful panoramic views, sparkling mountain lakes and blooming mountain pastures. Rustic Alpine huts and mountain restaurants supply weary hikers with traditional delicacies.
You can scale the Schmittenhöhe and Maiskogel on foot or via the cable car. Once you have reached the "Gipfelwelt 3000" on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, you have the option to take a guided tour to the summit (3,203m altitude), which offers a unique view of Austria's highest mountains, including the famous Grossglockner.
On request experienced local guides can accompany you on your hiking tours. And if you are interested in an especially extraordinary hiking experience, give "Lama Trekking" a try.

The summer fun at Kitzsteinhorn glacier

In summer a hike on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier is highly refreshing. The altitude of more than 3,000 m means that the glacier is also snowy in the warm season. Don't forget to visit the "Gipfelwelt 3000". In the mountain station you can watch an impressive movie depicting the Alpine nature that has been merged harmoniously with the existing modern infrastructure.
The "Ice Arena" is yet another highlight the Kitzsteinhorn glacier has to offer. In July and August the glacier plateau hosts slides, a snow beach and an ice bar. Diverse events round off the holiday experience.

Experience water

Water, in all forms, is an important part of the Zell am See-Kaprun region - as ice and snow on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, in its coolest and purest form with drinking water quality in the Zeller lake. In summer the crystal-clear Zeller lake is the perfect place for swimming and paddling. But the drinking water quality lake is also a great location for boating, sailing and water skiing.
Adventure seekers will love an exciting canyoning expedition. These tours through the wild waterways are, of course, supervised by highly experienced guides.

Close by are the rivers Salzach and Saalach which are great for rafting depending on how much you want to get shaken up. If you want to experience rivers and canyons as close as possible we suggest you book a canyoning trip!

Cycling & mountain biking

Zell am See-Kaprun is well-known for its diverse cycling paths. The offering ranges from short, flat tours to challenging mountain ascents. You can explore the surroundings cross-country on a mountain or trekking bike. Are you looking for a special challenge? The multi-day tour on the Tauern cycling path takes you on a 325km trip from Krimml to Passau. Even untrained cyclists can easily master the tour on e-bikes.
